Team Spotlight: Simon Doss, Project Manager
So apparently Copperline has “a type,” and Simon Doss fits it to a T. A quick browse through the bios of our more seasoned project managers and there are more than a few through lines: hardworking, passionate, genuine, honest, kind, knowledgeable, friendly, good guy. Either I need a thesaurus, or Copperline is crushing it with discovering the very BEST guys to lead our teams. The newest addition to our team was truly too good to pass up.
Simon’s roots go back to small towns in Idaho and Sonoma County (anyone else ever heard of Pocatello??). He’s the middle child of three - which might explain some of his independent spirit, hardworking nature, and ability to fit in wherever he goes. After graduating from high school in Northern California, Simon was drawn to the structure and purpose that military service has to offer and decided to join the Army National Guard. He completed basic training in Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 2011 and went on to serve our country for 6 ½ years, 3 ½ of which he was deployed away from home. Simon’s military service ranged from guarding the Golden Gate Bridge after 9/11, to a 10-month deployment in Iraq, to securing and protecting people and property in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, to prison guard in Guantanamo Bay. He has fascinating stories and experiences to share if you’re ever lucky enough to grab a beer with him after work.
During and after his military career Simon held a number of jobs, all of which were geared heavily towards the naturally gifted problem-solver and technically and mechanically handy guy that he is - he’s worked as a go-cart mechanic, been a driver for UPS, worked in a Volkswagen auto shop, attended the Academy of Art in San Francisco studying industrial design, and finally ended up working as a carpenter in the Bay Area. As a team member on numerous building projects all over the Bay Area, Simon has amassed a wide breadth of construction knowledge. He loves the details and problem-solving that goes into building a beautiful home. While working in San Francisco, Simon and his family bought a home in Richmond, CA that he began to renovate, room by room, on his own, for the better part of a year and a half.
After completing his home renovation project in Richmond, Simon was able to join his family in Bend, OR where they had relocated while he finished the renovation. It was while Simon was working independently as a contractor here in Bend that he was introduced to the Copperline guys and agreed to be part of the team. Josh says Simon is a model PM - he’s confident, a problem-solver, has a great attitude, asks questions, is hard-working, and treats his projects like they’re his own.
Off the jobsite, Simon is an avid car and motorcycle nut. He’s partial to German engineering and is a Volkswagen lover. He owns two VW Rabbits and, his pride and joy, a 2003 custom GTI that he has taken to car shows and has even been featured in car magazines. Simon has also embraced all the outdoor adventures that Central Oregon has to offer with his two elementary-aged boys, Ari and Eli, and his wife, Devon. They enjoy hiking, camping, snowboarding, and exploring.
Copperline is lucky to have found such a solid and competent project manager in Simon, and is even more fortunate that he’s a pretty cool guy to boot. He’s everyone’s buddy on the jobsite and hasn’t met a homeowner or subcontractor that he can’t get along with. It feels like the Copperline family is finally complete.
